Managed Tension (2026, Looking Deeper: Emerging Concepts)

The work borrows a structure from Mondrian, rectangular fields divided by dark borders, and a quality of light from Rothko. Each field is a separate frame of film, a single color gel lit from behind and photographed with a homemade pinhole camera. The camera shifted the colors, so the palette here is what the camera returned rather than what was chosen.

Those frames were printed and arranged on board, sizes and placements adjusted by testing until the balance held without symmetry. Because the work began with the pinhole camera, it had to end there: the assembled piece was photographed back through the same camera that started it.
